The Seed of an Idea

The symbolism of the Acorn was not lost on me while considering a logo for North Star Naturalist.

Before going live with North Star Naturalist last spring, I needed to figure out my logo.

For a long time, I considered the symbolism of the acorn. Acorns are associated with knowledge, growth, and potential. They nourish San Diego's wildlife communities. They come from the oak, a quintessential California tree—plus acorns are pretty cute.

Ultimately, I chose a different design that felt more human, but my mind has returned to acorns and seeds once again as we move through the harvest season in San Diego.

For the last month, I've been studying seeds for my latest event series that celebrates these little plant nuggets—from their biology, diversity and cultural significance to their surprising capacity to perceive the world around them.

Fall is a bountiful time for San Diego's nature and those love to who explore it. The acorns are ripening, the birds are flying in for winter, the toadstools are pushing up the soil. I've been enjoying the king tides, bioluminescence, and brilliant fall foliage myself (yes, San Diego has fall color too!).

I hope you take some time this month to enjoy nature's gems—or should I say seeds—with friends, family, and maybe even your local naturalist.
